Most Useful Websites for Leaving Cert Students

Published on 7th January 2016 under Blog Topic - Students,

There are so many, many websites offering advice and support to students on every conceivable element of the career/college decision. Topics include; student finance, course availability, postgraduate options, graduate routes and professional paths.

During the ‘make your mind up’ time of January and February, the sheer volume of information available can actually be more of a hindrance than a help.  As 6th year students try to stay motivated and committed to their study; the task of finalising college choices can seem impossible.  Meanwhile, parents try to offer guidance and support in terms of preparing a realistic plan for the next 3-5 years for their son or daughter. Often parents are unfamiliar with the third level system, the CAO application process, grant options etc., and can over rely on their teenagers knowledge. “It will be alright Mam!” “I know what I’m doing” etc., sound familiar! Some parents are lucky enough to have a friend or family member ‘in the know’ who can offer practical advice.

Therefore, to short circuit some of this information overload, I decided to put together a list of the most useful websites for leaving cert students. This list was compiled using the wonderful resource booklet Aiming Higher: A Guide for Parents and Guardians, which was created by University of Limerick. It is a well written and easily read booklet that walks you through of all the steps to college enrolment. It is available for download at http://www3.ul.ie/careers/aiminghigher

Happy researching to all the 6th year students and parents out there!

Remember if you need some additional support, I’m available too!
