There’s so much written about the Leaving Cert at this time of year; lots of worthwhile advice and tips. What can I add to the thousands of words already dedicated to the subject? A different perspective, perhaps?
What I learned from the Leaving Cert:
- How to categorise and summarise huge chunks of information into manageable bites of information.
- That Teachers are the subject/exam experts – they understand exam trends, so listen up!
- How to visually summarise information for recall at exam time.
- The scoring breakdown for each exam question is key.
- How to use 10% of total exam time to read the paper, select your questions, sketch out your answer on rough paper, rereading your answers before time is up.
- Time management – for study, revision, exams.
- Discipline.
I guess I learned a little about a lot of things from Maths to Biology to French. These lessons, and in particular, the exam and study techniques were very handy at college.
What I didn’t learn from the Leaving Cert:
- The power of research.
- How to believe and have faith in my own opinion.
- That Teachers are learners too.
- Good questions are the best way to understand – so ask loads!
- How to be a good friend.
- To listen to my Mum’s career advice!
- That a good grade is not the only measure of success.
Although my Leaving Cert summer is 23 years ago (OMG, I’m old), I still remember the whole prep, process and aftermath vividly. There are lessons to be learned, but the Leaving Cert is only one chapter in your book of Life. The results won’t/don’t define you. Regardless of your points, you can pick a rewarding career and enjoy many years of making new friends, learning new skills and wonderful new experiences,
Buckle up!
Wishing you luck and happiness!
